WHITTIER BRIDGE/I-95, Newburyport/Amesbury, MA

The John Greenleaf Whittier Bridge, crosses the Merrimack River, connecting Newburyport and Amesbury on
I-95. MassDOT’s $292 million Design/Build project by Walsh/McCourt JV will replace the thru-truss bridges built in 1961 with twin network tied arch structures. The tour includes an on-sight view of the new bridges with four travel lanes, a high speed shoulder, and a breakdown lane in each direction, along with a shared-use path for bicycles and pedestrians. Four adjacent I-95 bridges are being replaced or reconstructed along the 3.5 mile segment of the interstate as part of the project, with completion slated for the fall of 2017.

SARAH MILDRED LONG BRIDGE, Portsmouth, NH/Kittery, ME

Originally built in 1940, the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge provides a regional link between Maine and New Hampshire. The SML replacement project is a $160 million joint venture between MaineDOT and NH DOT, with MaineDOT serving as the lead. The new bridge was designed by FIGG and Hardesty & Hanover JV. Cianbro is the lead contractor. Tour participants will learn about the new bridge’s precast concrete towers and bridge segments, unique hybrid steel box girder lift span and improved alignment and vertical clearance. The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge is expected to be completed in September of 2017.
