Annie is a Partner in BDO’s International Tax Services practice. She has more than 20 years of public accounting experience advising clients in all areas of international and corporate U.S. federal income taxation. to public and private companies in a variety of industries.
Annie consults with both inbound and outbound clients on a wide range of international issues, including cross border mergers and acquisitions, subpart F, foreign tax credit and repatriation planning, income tax treaty analysis, due diligence, U.S. tax planning for non-U.S. multinational
enterprises, and ASC 740. She also assists clients in interactions with the Internal Revenue Service, including income tax examinations, requests for private letter rulings, and other administrative relief.
Mariano Sori is a partner in BDO’s State & Local Tax services practice and National Leader for State Income & Franchise Tax services. He has more than 28 years of state tax consulting experience within a public accounting environment and concentrates on income and franchise tax issues such as nexus, state tax base modifications, apportionment of income, business/non-business income, unitary taxation, gross receipt taxes, allocation of partnership items, and state filing options.
Mariano focuses on performing state tax diagnostic reviews designed to provide businesses with an assessment of their state tax position, including the identification of refund and prospective filing opportunities and the reduction of exposure in multiple jurisdictions. In addition, Mariano assists businesses in designing and implementing structural enhancements in order to generate long-term state tax reductions.
Mariano consults on all aspects of state income tax, including participating in mergers and acquisition transactions, due diligence reviews, representation on state tax controversy matters, and assisting companies with state tax compliance and state tax accrual reviews. He has worked with Fortune 1000 and mid-size companies in industries such as manufacturing, retail, consumer services, financial services, real estate, technology, and transportation.
Nick has over 19 years of tax consulting experience. He has reviewed, researched anddocumented solutions for complex state and local tax issues in the areas of income andfranchise, sales and use, payroll and employment, and property taxes and unclaimedproperty. He has expertise in identifying and serving multi-state client needs andperforming creative tax and unclaimed property reviews to quantify potential savings viaprocess improvements and prospective corporate restructuring projects.
As the firm’s Midwest Unclaimed Property Practice Leader, Nick has establishedprofessional relationships with many of the state unclaimed property administrators inhandling client matters, and has successfully negotiated voluntary disclosure agreementson behalf of clients and provided audit representation services. He has managed andsuccessfully filed over 50 VDAs with Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana andMissouri. Additionally, he has assisted clients in many other states in his VDA and auditdefense representation.
Nick’s unique accounting and legal background allows him to assist clients and their legalcounsel identify and pursue both accounting and legal positions to mitigate auditexposures. He routinely reduces his clients exposures through modification of statisticalsampling methods, removal of distortive transactions, base period alignment, modelingprocess that matches available and researchable records standards, etc. He assistsclients and legal counsel on reclassifying potential property types determined to beescheatable on audit to non-escheatable property types or property waived for auditreview. Nick has significant escheat planning experience.
Kelly Richmond Pope is an Associate Professor in the School of Accountancy and MIS at DePaul University in Chicago, IL and founder of Helios Digital Learning, Inc. She received her doctorate in accounting from Virginia Tech and she is a licensed certified public accountant. She is a recognized expert in the forensic accounting field and has conducted forensic accounting seminars around the world for universities, corporations and governmental entities including the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
Kelly is the producer / director of the HBO Award-Winning Documentary, All the Queen’s Horses.. Her first educational documentary, Crossing the Line: Ordinary People Committing Extraordinary Crimes, has won numerous national education innovation awards and is used in colleges, universities, and corporations throughout the country. All the Queen’s Horses is her first feature-length film. Kelly participated in the inaugural Kartemquin’s Diverse Voices in Docs fellowship program and participated in the Tribeca Film Institute’s Tribeca Hacks in Chicago, IL.
