In the past few years, law enforcement officers have been scrutinized for the level of force applied and whether or not the application of that force is justified. This conference will examine how rulings of nationwide cases such as Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner, have affected law enforcement and their decisions to use force. Topics such as issues facing law enforcement officers in the future, ways police departments should consider structuring their policies and procedures, and managing use of force and death incident risks are just a few topics to be discussed by leading attorneys, ranking law enforcement officers, and doctors. At the conclusion of the conference there will be an open round table discussion addressing topics discussed in the conference and questions by participants. This conference is open to police trainers, police managers, policy makers, city/county attorneys, police legal advisors, and medical examiners. Topics will included:

  • Laws; rulings post Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner
  • Issues law enforcement officers might face in the future
  • “Taser” death related cases
  • Quantum of force
  • Round table discussion
  • Q&A
  • Fluctuating force standards, what does all this mean?
  • How to effectively deal with it.
  • Understanding “so-called” “BEST” practices.
  • Structuring policy, procedures, guidelines to avoid trip wires.
  • Leadership mechanisms to optimally manage officers’ force.
  • How to handle <1 per career (on average) events.
  • The realities of law enforcement temporal deaths.
  • Positive cookie cutters – instilling positive, not negative habits.
  • Managing use of force and death incident risks.
  • The public’s First Amendment rights vs. officer safety,
  • Recognizing calculated efforts to bait you into a use of force.
