National Quilting Day 2021

A free will donation, to help cover the cost of the event, will be greatly appreciated.  Collection jars will be available at the event.

We will not be hosting a pot luck lunch this year, however the Heritage Center's James River Cafe will be open at 11 am.

Classes include:

Saturday, 3/13, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Embroidered 3D Snowmen w/ Pam Fenoff

Supplies Needed:   

• Embroidery Machine 5x7" hoop or larger
• No Show Mesh (must fit hoop)
• White Felt -  9" x 12" (6-12 pieces)
• Applique Fabrics - variety
• Embroidery Threads - variety
• Applique Scissors
• Velcro - hook side only 6" x 2 1/2" strips (3-6 pieces)

 

Painting a Meadowlark w/ Sister Nancy Gunderson

This class will teach students how to create and paint their own designs for a custom quilted work of art.  In the morning session, students will learn tips and techniques for painting on fabric and will complete the painting of a meadowlark. 

Supplies Needed: 

• $20 kit (provided by the instructor)
• Paint - Jacquard Lumiere Metallic Exciter Pack (9 jewel colors) - Will need to be ordered, cannot be found locally ($15.36 @ Amazon, $12.39 @ Blick or Utrecht)
• Brushes - synthetic with small round point and several sizes of square, chisel style brushes - Instructor recommends Robert Simmons Simply Simmons Value Brush Set of 5, available at Amazon for $14.69.
• Paint Pallet
• Tracing pencil - for black fabric.  Instructor recommends Panda Pencil or FriXion Pen (can be erased with heat or eraser)
• Ruler - 12" or longer
• Light box or painters tape to use nearby window

 

Saturday, 3/13, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free Motion Quilting w/ Sister Nancy Gunderson 

The afternoon session Sister Nancy will introduce students to some unique free-motion quilting designs for quilting in the details of the bird, thus creating a finished work of art to frame or to make into a pillow, quilt or wall hanging later.

This class can be attended w/o having attended the morning session.

Supplies Needed:

• BSK - basic sewing kit - pins, scissors, cutting tools, etc.
• Sewing machine capable of free motion quilting
• Light colored fabric - 18" square - if you did not attend the morning class
• Thread and full bobbin (black if quilting the meadowlark)
• Batting - 18" square, can be cotton or 80/20, but not high loft
• Backing - your choice
• Quilt Sandwich - for practice, approximately 8.5" x 12", can be muslin or any light colored fabric
• Notebook / paper and pencil - to practice designs / take notes

 

Capital Quilters will supply paper towels, water cups, trash bags and table coverings.

 

Coffee Cup Caddy w/ Kari Bies

This sewing cup cozy is a cute, practical way to hold all of your essential sewing tools, pens, pencils, etc.  Recyce a mug to create a great container to keep or give away.  Three fat quarters will make two of these cute cozies!

Supplies Needed:   

• $10 for pattern
• BSK - basic sewing kit (machine, cutting tools, thread, scissors, etc.)
• 2-3 coordinating FQs
