Gaining a foundational understanding of poverty is critical for addressing the needs of the children and parents we work with in our schools. Using current information from authors Ruby Payne, Eric Jensen, Carol Dweck, Robert Barr and Donna Beegle, this workshop will review the basics surrounding poverty, the latest brain research strategies for addressing it, and the miscommunication that often surrounds the issue in our schools. We will discuss behaviors that impact our classrooms, for children as well as for the adults. There will also be strategies for creating optimism and hope-filled schools.  This workshop will be the foundation for  the December 9th workshop: Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind . (Though they both can be stand-alone workshops.) The presenter will be Dr. April Spencer, Secondary Curriculum/PD Coordinator.
