Did you know that as the world’s population is expanding, agriculture is the one commodity responsible for feeding over 300 million people every day? But as this statistic is increasing, the land availability is decreasing. How do we as K-5 educators bring this global issue to the local classrooms of western North Carolina? North Carolina Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom (NC AITC) is an educational program designed to foster a better understanding of agriculture and its role in our lives and the economy of our state and nation. NC AITC is sponsored by the North Carolina Farm Bureau (NCFB) and provides K-5 educators with instructional materials and strategies designed to support the current Common Core and Essential Standards framework. This workshop offers classroom-ready activities and lesson plans. It will focus upon several unique aspects of agriculture with exploration of the work taking place on the farm. Teachers will leave better prepared to educate students and to help them understand the sources of their food, fiber, and forestry products native to their local school district. The workshop itself will begin on a local farm setting to set the stage for a real-world NC Farm Bureau AITC experience. The afternoon session to be held at WRESA will include lunch and presentations by NC AITC experts. Session limited to 25 participants.
