This hands-on workshop will explore useful strategies for developing students' writing skills particularly in grades 4 -12. The presentation will begin with a brief overview of the writing research.  Participants will then focus on parts of speech and sentence parts as they apply to the act of writing.  They will learn about the components of a good lesson and strategies for developing sentence sense in student writers.  The presenter will then introduce a structured, sequential approach to teaching paragraphs, including idea generation and organization as well as the writing process itself.  Participants will examine an effective structure for longer essays and discuss proofreading and editing.  In this Common Core aligned workshop, participants will practice with all introduced techniques, many of which they can then apply to the very next day in their classrooms!  This could count as a literacy credit.
