Lester Laminack: Jumpstart Your K-6 Reading Program !
Revving Up Read-Aloud in the Land of Standards and Common Sense
March 12, 2015 9 am – 3 pm
Registration Fee: $35
In this session, you will examine how read-aloud experiences can be instructional and help you and your students build the scaffolding necessary for proficiency in literacy. You will explore rich texts, be engaged in the art and function of read aloud and reconnect with the power of your “story-telling voice” to give dimension to the books you share across the year. You will explore broad intentions for read-aloud events and examine opportunities for read-aloud experiences across the school day and throughout the curriculum. Through read-aloud experiences, we will explore text-structure and craft, comprehension and fluency, vocabulary and conceptual development. We will bring the art of storytelling to bear to weave the threads of content and literacy learning into one rich tapestry. Lester L. Laminack is Professor Emeritus at Western Carolina University, Department of Birth-Kindergarten, Elementary and Middle Grades Education. He is co-author of Heinemann titles Learning Under the Influence of Language and Literature; Reading Aloud Across the Curriculum; Climb Inside a Poem; Bullying Hurts: Teaching Kindness Through Read Aloud and Guided Conversation and The Writing Teacher’s Troubleshooting Guide. This session is designed for K-6 teachers, administrators, curriculum coordinators and coaches. If you have questions, contact Karen Sumner, ksumner@wresa.org or 828.418.0011, ext. 26.
