Registration Deadline: 2/03/14

Find yourself caught in the daily struggles of growing up in the 1950’s as you explore the novel Hitch, written by Jeanette Ingold. Using this adolescent historical fiction, participants will explore the use of a novel as the focal point in delivering an interdisciplinary unit; a unit designed to promote literature and science as well as life skills, cultural awareness and leadership. We will explore a day in the life of a CCC worker as we address literacy, the impact of geography and weather on daily life, and Earth’s systems and processes, specifically the study of soil. The workshop will include the use of Vernier Labquests and sensory probes to explore the wonders of soil. Additional activities such as soil triangulation, soil identification and others will be included. The workshop will also provide activities for promoting reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. This exploration in interdisciplinary studies is based on 6th grade curriculum and all content areas are encouraged to attend. The workshop will be co-facilitated by Dr. Teresa Cowan and Dr. Emily Darling, The Science House and Dr. Karen Sumner, Elementary/PD Coordinator, WRESA.
