These Roots, This Stone:

Finding a Sense of Place Through Art

The St. Croix Watershed Research Station, in cooperation with historic Arcola Mills, announces an outdoor workshop on Saturday, September 14. Presented by 2013 Artists at Pine Needles Susan Armington and Bonnie Ploger, this event at Arcola Mills will offer participants the chance to explore their connections to nature.

The workshop focuses on deepening the sense of connection to the natural world and to a particular place through outdoor art-making. Artist Susan Armington and artist/biologist Bonnie Ploger describe the project:  "We will use an intuitive process to gather natural objects and construct temporary artistic installations on the grounds. We will reflect on our creations individally and as a group, searching out their different qualities and seeing them as metaphors for our inner selves and what connects us most deeply to nature. No art experience is necessary!"

The workshop is limited to 20 participants, ages 13 ad older. The registration fee is $25 and includes materials. To register, click the link below.

This workshop is presented by the St. Croix Watershed Research Station as part of its Artist at Pine Needles residency program, in collaboration with Historic Arcola Mills. The Artist at Pine Needles program invites natural history artists or writers to spend 2 to 4 weeks in residence to immerse themselves in a field experience, gather resource materials, and interact with environmental scientists and the local community.

The St. Croix Watershed Research Station, the environmental research station of the Science Museum of Minnesota, is located near Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota. The setting for the Artist at Pine Needles project is the James Taylor Dunn Pine Needles Cabin, located just north of the village along the St. Croix River. In 2013, resident artists are Susan Armington and Bonnie Ploger, poet Su Smallen and painter/scultor Jessica Zeglin.

Arcola Mills is a historic site on the beautiful St. Croix River with over 50 acres of forested land and a mansion that is host to the National Park Service this season.
