Driving Directions

Arcola Mills is located approximately 6 miles north of Stillwater just off Hwy. 95.  DO NOT turn off Hwy 95 at the first sign labeled "Arcola Trail" that is about 1 1/2 mile north of Stillwater.  Instead,  proceed an additional 4 1/2 miles on Hwy 95 and turn right at the SECOND Arcola Trail sign .  The turnoff is opposite the "Albertson's Farm" sign on 95.  After you turn right onto Arcola Trail N., the sign and entrance to Arcola Mills is on the left shortly after the paved road becomes a dirt road.

[For those travelling East on Hwy 36 from the direction of the Twin Cities, we suggest avoiding the frequent congestion in downtown Stillwater by following the sign for the Stillwater shortcut---take a left onto Manning Rd (Hwy 15) and proceed about 3 miles to a right hand turn onto Hwy 96.  This dead-ends at Hwy. 95 just north of Stillwater;  turn left onto Hwy 95, then note directions above].

Creating the Wooden Bowl

September 26 & 27, 2013

9 am - 4 pm each day

Jim Sannerud BowlsThe wooden bowl is a reflection of both utility and beauty - an inspiring craft form to experience. Explore the grains of northern hardwoods - birchand maple - as you learn detailed lathe handling and turning techniques to turn  a wooden bowl on the electric lathe. From tree to bowl, learn how to identify the best parts of a tree for a bowl blank and how to orient stock for the best grain patterns to match the outcomes you desire. To ensure longevity and finishing of the bowl, drying techniques will also be covered. Take home a traditional utility bowl for the kitchen as well as an artistic form for the coffee table. Your materials fee includes all wood for the projects plus the use of individual lathes and set of tools.

Instructor Jim Sannerud studied in Sweden with Willie and Jogge Sundquist. He is an instructor at North House Folk School, the American Swedish Institute, Vesterheim, and the AAW Gallery of Wood Art.
