Community Action 50th Anniversary Dinner

Mark Kennedy Shriver

Michigan Community Action Agency Association will celebrate 50 Years of Community Action in Michigan with a reception and dinner on April 30, 2014 at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Lansing. Our featured speaker will be Mark Kennedy Shriver, VP of Save the Children, an international nonprofit focusing on early childhood health and development. He is the son of Sargent Shriver, the architect of President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty programs, and author of A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father Sargent Shriver. It was Sargent Shriver who put President Johnson's broad plans into action--Community Action, to be precise. Our network was among the original programs instituted by the Economic Opportunity Act which President Johnson signed into law on August 20, 1964.

Governor Rick Snyder also plans to attend the event and congratulate the group on their work helping low income Michigan families meet the economic challenges of the past half century and currently.

The evening will also include the 2014 Community Action Awards where we will celebrate the achieve ments and contributions of 10 of our member agencies clients and volunteers, as well as a brief "graduation" ceremony for CAA staff who have completed MCAAA's 18-month Leadership Development Institute.

A reception is planned for 5:00 p.m. in the prefunction area outside the Capitol Ballroom on the second floor of the hotel. Dinner will begin at 6:00 with remarks from the Governor. Mr. Shriver will be introduced at approximately 6:45. Following his remarks, Mr. Shriver will participate in presentation of this year's Community Action Awards. The event will end at approximately 8:30 p.m.
