The Pulsating Heart Of Therapy: The Personal Relationship

Nationally renown family therapist Harry Aponte will visit the Tulane School of Social Work on Friday, March 4, 2016, to conduct a CEU workshop entitled "The Pulsating Heart Of Therapy: The Personal Relationship." The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 343 at the School of Social Work, located at 127 Elk Place. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Participants will receive 5.5 board-approved social work CEUs for attending. The event has also been approved for 5.5 LMFT Clinical CE hours as well, so rememeber, this workshop is relevant and important to your practice whether you supervise or not!

All therapy is conducted through the medium of the relationship between client and therapist. There are three basic components of the therapeutic process: the relationship, the assessment, and the intervention. It is through the humanity of the therapist that the empathic connection is made with the client, that the therapist understands and intuits what is driving the pathology in the client and clients’ relationships, and that the therapist reaches the most wounded and vulnerable places in the client when intervening. But, what is this “humanity”? It is the life experiences, gender, culture, race/ethnicity, spirituality, etc. of the therapist – but most especially the therapist’s own personal woundedness through which the therapist can relate to the client’s woundedness. We will talk here about how to train therapists to fully utilize all of their selves when working purposefully and professionally through their own person.

Course Objectives:

• Describe the preparation of the self in therapy through self-awareness, self-access, and self-management;
• Elaborate on the use of self in achieving therapeutically effective relationships, assessments and interventions;
• Present the basics of training and supervision within the Person-of-the-Therapist model.

Workshop Schedule
9 am – What is the “Person-of-the-Therapist” model of the Use of Self?
10 am – Break
10:15 – Video of the use of self in a session on forgiveness
11:15 – Discussion of the clinical application of the model in the video
12 pm – Lunch
1 pm – Training and supervising therapists within the model
2 pm – Break
2:15 – Live demonstration of clinical supervision within the model
3:15 – Break
3:30 – Discussion of the supervisory experience
4 pm – Finish

About Our Presenter
Dr. Harry J. Aponte, PhD, MSW, LCSW, LMFT, is a family therapist known for his writings and workshops on the person of the therapist, spirituality in therapy, therapy with disadvantaged and culturally diverse families, and structural family therapy. Dr. Aponte was a staff member and teacher of family therapy at the Menninger Clinic, and Director of the Philadelphia Child Guidance Center. Currently, Dr. Aponte is clinical associate professor in the Couple & Family Therapy Department of Drexel University in Philadelphia.  He has a private practice in Philadelphia, and conducts training and workshops throughout the country and abroad.

Dr. Aponte published Bread & Spirit through Norton, a book that speaks to therapy with today’s poor in the context of ethnicity, culture and spirituality.Dr. Aponte and Dr. Karni Kissil have edited a book entitled The Person of the Therapist Training Model: Mastering the Use of Self, published by Routledge, which is scheduled to come out in January of 2016.

Parking Information
The Tulane School of Social Work is located at 127 Elk Place. Please see the location map.

There are two entrances to the school. You can enter through the main entrance located at 127 Elk Place or via the second floor skywalk from the Saratoga Parking Garage, located at 111 S. Saratoga St.

There are various surface lots in close proximity to the school that you can use if you would like. The average price to park in a ground level lot is $4 per day. If you park in a ground lot, please use the school’s main entrance located at 127 Elk Place and take the elevator to the third floor. The Saratoga Parking Garage is the closest parking garage and is located at 111 S. Saratoga St. The daily rate for the garage is $7, but the garage does have direct access to the school via the skywalk on the second floor. To find the skywalk, just follow the yellow posts in the parking garage once you exit the elevator lobby on the second floor in the garage. Once you enter 127 Elk Place, go down the hall to the elevators and take them to the third floor.
