Cataloging for Non-Catalogers - 2 Part Webinar (04/22/20 & 04/29/20)

IMPORTANT: This is a two part webinar that meets
Wednesday, April 22 AND Wednesday, April 29 from
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM each day. You must attend both sessions.

NEFLIN is proud to present an EXPANDED reimagining of one of our more popular past offerings. If you have ever been curious about the mysterious world of cataloging, here's your chance to gain some great knowledge. If you just recently started working in cataloging or are just curious about what goes into creating those records that compose your library's holdings. This two part webinar is for all library staffers who want to learn more about cataloging. You will also likely improve your searching and reference skills once you become better acquainted with the logic behind the decision-making process.

Part 1: Basics of cataloging
The important parts of a book (and a movie) in terms of cataloging, what to look for in a record (is it a match)?, the basic parts of a MARC record, the correlation between the call number and the subject heading, and general guidelines for cataloging.

Part 2: Exercises & Troubleshooting
Tips for searching, and discussions on treatment (is it a book or a serial?); different edition or a reprint, what to do if there is no record? Should you edit an OCLC record?

Virtual Trainer: Robin Fay

Robin Fay is a Metadata and Technology Librarian with over 15 years of experience. She has worked with ARL libraries, the Library of Congress, the Digital Public Library of America, among others.

This is an online class. Access information will be emailed one week ahead.

Cost: NEFLIN classes are free of charge for Florida library staff. Registration is required for all classes and NEFLIN members get priority.
