The River Mile Mission Statement
To foster investigation and understanding of the Columbia River Watershed and to promote watershed health 

The River Mile is…
…a network of educators, students, resource managers, scientists and  environmental educators in the  Columbia River Watershed sharing what they know and learn about the Columbia River Watershed and sharing best practices, lessons learned, examples of participation, links to resources and collecting and sharing real world scientific data.  It is a participant driven approach to learning, researching and exploring the watershed health of the Columbia River.

 Students and teachers are engaged in the practices of scientists and resource  managers as they become intimately familiar with their  outdoor classroom by spending time in the field inventorying, monitoring, analyzing, investigating and researching site discoveries.

Join Rick Reynolds, veteran educator and author of Inquiry, Exploration, and Service Learning in the Sagebrush Ecosystem and Janice Elvidge from the National Park Service and The River Mile Network as we explore a variety of resources from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Audubon, BLM, and other partners. Earn PDUs while exploring hands-on NGSS/STEAM activities in beautiful Spokane, WA. Help us inspire students to think critically about sagebrush ecosystems and ways to protect them and their fascinating species!

Schedule

  • Introduction to the sagebrush ecosystem
    and trunks with hands-on materials
  • Overview of lesson plans aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards + Common Core State Standards
  • Hands-on activities, including some outside in the ecosystem
  • Lunch (included)—can be enjoyed outside!

Professional development hours are available for all teachers! Idaho PD credit is available, Washington clock hours and certificate's of completion are all available. Please indicate which you need on your registration.
