The River Mile Mission Statement
To foster investigation and understanding of the Columbia River Watershed and to promote watershed health
The River Mile is…
…a network of educators, students, resource managers, scientists and environmental educators in the Columbia River Watershed sharing what they know and learn about the Columbia River Watershed and sharing best practices, lessons learned, examples of participation, links to resources and collecting and sharing real world scientific data. It is a participant driven approach to learning, researching and exploring the watershed health of the Columbia River.
Students and teachers are engaged in the practices of scientists and resource managers as they become intimately familiar with their outdoor classroom by spending time in the field inventorying, monitoring, analyzing, investigating and researching site discoveries.

The River MIle Network is pleased to announce it's patnership with the University of Idaho IdaH20 Master Water Stewards program for the collection and sharing of water quality data throughout the Pacific Northwest!
The IDAH2O Master Water Stewards program is a volunteer, citizen scientist effort to collect basic water quality data. This program is offered through University of Idaho Extension to provide a unique opportunity to learn about and document regional water issues.
To become a certified IDAH2O Master Water Steward, you must attend an eight-hour workshop.
Workshops are daylong indoor and outdoor sessions that cover a wide variety of topics, such as starting a monitoring plan and how to network with local citizens interested in water quality.
IDAH2O workshops focus on topics like:
- Watershed investigations
- Why and how monitoring works
- Water safety
- Hands-on field experience
- Other related water quality topics
Upon completion of an IDAH2O workshop, all participants will be IDAH2O Master Water Stewards.
Master Water Stewards who commit to regular monitoring and register a monitoring location on a stream (or lake/pond) are either assigned a complete water quality monitoring kit for use while actively monitoring or access to one of several Lending Library kits housed in Coeur d’Alene, Driggs, Island Park area, Moscow and Boise.
Credit and Clock Hours
Free Clock Hours are available for Washington teachers and certificates of participation will be provided to all Oregon teachers. For Idaho educators sity professional development credit is available. Contact us for more information.
