Workshop Description:
Treating trauma and substance abuse can be extremely difficult. Trauma includes, but is not limited to, childhood trauma, complex trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, recently events such as mass shootings, natural disasters, wars, etc. have surged thus creating an increased number of trauma survivors needing treatment.
Research indicates that trauma and substance use are highly comorbid making it more difficult to effectively treat patients. As a result, research purports that mental health clinicians are more likely to treat these co-occurring patients yet lack, or have a cursory knowledge of , evidence based methods to effectively do so.
Participants will receive a comprehensive overview of trauma and how it relates to an increase of substance abuse. The presenter will provide trauma specific interventions to utilize when working with individuals with trauma and substance abuse. Additionally, the presenter will discuss the trauma based competencies developed in 2014 and how these beliefs, knowledge, and skills are vital for the trauma-competent counselor. Resources for further reading and training will be provided.
Learning Objectives: Once the trainee completes this workshop, he/she will:
