Workshop Description:

We hold as sources of inspiration, person who have experienced deep hurt and yet do not dwell on that hurt or hold grudges over it. We might think of Nelson Mandela of South Africa, held in prison for 297 years yet, when released, refused to hold a grudge or seek revenge, or we wonder at the families of Amish children gunned down by a madman, forgiving him immediately and inviting his parents to attend th efunerals of those children. How is this possible? How do we move from deep hurt and the "justifiable anger" associated with it to forgiveness and healing, to peace and reconciliation?

In this presentation, we will examine the validity of anger as a measur eof the hurt sustained, the proper processing of that anger, the place of support in coming to healing and enabling our letting go of the anger for OUR sake, the proper self-examiniation to recognize our part in the situation, if any exists, moving from shame to healthy guilt and self-forgiveness, and, finally, drawing those who have hurt us into our prayer and finding the peace to which we are entitled. We will thus better appreciate the hourney from resentment to forgiveness as a core component of the spirituality at the basis of healing the anguish of addiction.

Learning Objectives: Once the trainee completes this workshop he/she will:

  • Describe the role of anger deriving from profound hurt.
  • Pinpoint th esources of support in moving the process of forgiveness forward.
  • Discuss the challenge and describe the process of "praying for the 'offender'".
