Understanding Substance Use Disorder Levels of Care

Using the American Society of Addiction Medicine Third Edition (2013) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition), diagnostic criteria of substance/alcohol use disorders will be discussed; as well as appropriate placement options for treatment. Participants will be educated on how to document severity levels and specifiers when diagnosing substance/alcohol use disorders. Substance/alcohol withdrawal symptoms and common withdrawal management instruments will be explored. ASAM's six dimensions of multidimensional assessments will be explored using 1-4 risk ratings. ASAM's level of care (0.5-4) will be explained in detail. Participants will have the opportunity to use assessment scenarios to utilize the Crosswalk of the ASAM Admission Criterial (adult) for appropriate level of care placement.

Kelly joined Talbott Recovery's Business Development Team in May 2013 and was promoted to Director of Business Development in Summer 2014. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Mercer University in Macon, GA and received her Master's of Education Degree in professional counseling from University of West Georgia in Carrollton, GA. Kelly has worked in various treatment settings as a teacher, school counselor, and adult/family/child/adolescent counselor. She gained experience treating chemical dependency while working as an intensive outpatient therapist conducting family/individual and group therapy. Kelly is currently a licensed professional counselor and a certified clinical advanced alcohol and drug counselor in the state of Georgia.
