                                       The Addicted Family

  Woody Roberts, D.Min., CAC

Workshop description:

Clinical settings have discussed for almost fifty years the dysfunction that takes place in the chemically addicted family. Quickly the discussion centers around addiction as being a family illness and certainly the family is devastated and often divided with many taking sides for and against the addict. The addicted family develops its own rules,  roles and survival methods. The family will often begin to mimic the behavior  of the addicted. The anger and resentments consume the family and all members usually go to their corner and come out fighting. This workshop will help the clinician develop strategies and assignments for the family to promote individual and family healings.

Learning Objectives: Once the trainee completes this workshop he/she will:

  • Assess the damage in the family and begin to develop appropriate coping skills for healing.
  • Identify and describe the pathway for self care.
  • Utilize appropriate methods for obtaining and maintaining acceptance and forgiveness.
  • Demonstrate use of skills for ongoing resolution of family dysfunction.
