 Sexual & Love Addiction:
Their Treatment and How They Relate to Other Addictions

Alan Yorker, LMFT

The incidence of problem behaviors and emotions in the area of sexuality and relationships is an ever increasing phenomenon in the treatment of chemical addiction. The interactive nature of mood altering mechanisms in the addicted brain requires the modern addiction counselor to help individuals with these problems beyond alcohol and drug abuse. Sexual preoccupation and acting out behaviors are being seen more often as relapse triggers returning the recovering addict to his or her drug(s) of choice. Current estimates are that at least half of all addicted substance dependent males are also sexually addicted. Understanding this dangerous trend and being professionally empowered to address it are necessary skills for the mental
health and addiction counselor in today’s world.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participant will be able to list four madalities of addictive mood altering.
  • Participant will be able to explain normal and addicted sexual behavior development.
  • Participant will be able to explain male and female gender differences in the brain.
  • Participant will be able to odiscuss clinical treatment of sexual and romantic compulsion.
