  Ethical Competencies in the Treatment of Boys & Men

    Ronee Griffith, Ph.D. and Alan Stewart, Ed.S.

This five-hour ethics workshop introduces new ethical guidelines and research on the special needs of men and boys and the clinical competencies necessary for working with this underserved and mis-served group of clients.  All codes of ethics require avoiding harm, acquiring competencies to work with culturally diverse clients (who include men and boys), and promoting equal access to counseling services.

Clinicians’ understanding of the fragmentation and detrimental constraints men encode from toxic cultural messaging is essential in helping them make sense of their lives and relationships.  This program aims to heighten ethical sensitivity, to promote ethical conduct, and to improve therapeutic outcomes with male clients.  Participants will learn about current biases in practice and how to modify their therapeutic style to work more effectively with men. By exploring thoughts about “how to be a man”, practitioners will become more aware of their internalized notions of masculinity as well as become more competent to help male clients deepen meaningful connections with themselves and others.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify ethical standards related to discriminatory practices in the assessment and treatment of male clients;
  • Identify ethical standards related to competence in working with male clients;
  • Identify ethical standards related to cultural sensitivity with male clients;
  • Discuss new APA specialty guidelines on Psychological Practice with Boys and Men (2014);
  • Demonstrate three alternative techniques for more effectively engaging men in therapy.
