Growing Up in the Addicted Family: Recognizing & Working With ACOA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) Behaviors in Your Clients

  Woody Roberts, D.Min., CAC

Growing up in a addicted family can be a very difficult process as one daily tries to figure out the confusion.  The process of healing is difficult because very few positive things find consistency.  The addicted family is filled with anger, fear, and much denial just like the addict. The adult child of an alcoholic (ACOA) is a grown up caught in the netting of the childhood but years later they struggle to be set free.  It is estimated that there are 28 million ACOA’s in the U.S.  The healing must begin.

Learning Objectives

When the trainee completes this course, he or she will be able to:

  • Help clients to understand the childhood perceptions that shape adult behaviors.
  • Learn the evaluation process of childhood events with an adult awareness.
  • Help clients to learn appropriate coping skills to resolve lingering experiences of shame, sadness, pain and anger.
  • Help clients to learn appropriate ways to live as an adult without denying childhood memories through acceptance and forgiveness.
