"Girls in Engineering" Day
In honor of National Engineering Day, the EnergyExplorium is hosting "Introduce a Girl to Engineering" day on Friday, Feb. 21. This event is open to middle school age girls who have an interest in engineering or want to learn more about it.
The event will include the following:
• A presention introducting girls to engineering careers.
• A hands-on engineering activity (registration for an activity is required - see below).
• The event will wrap-up with the showing of the movie "Dream Big: Engineering our World" in our auditorium - the movie leverages the scale of the giant screen to showcase engineering marvels worldwide. From Dubai's record-high skyscrapers to bridges soaring through clouds, audiences can experience the massive scale and forces of nature that challenge engineers.
Description of activities:

- Oranges and batteries - can you get fruit and other objects to produce an electrical current that powers a lightbulb? Learn about the connection to engineering and the company Tesla.
- Natural resource and macroinvertabrates - explore some of the natural resources Duke Energy studies and monitors every day. Fish, birds of prey, water sampling/quality and aquatic macroinvertebrates will be part of this activity.
- Water quality and water filtration design - Girls will be asked to design methods to filter water using ordinary materials, while also considering their designs' material and cost efficiencies. They will learn about the importance of water and its role in our everyday lives.
