The Case for Wheels:
Selecting the Clinically Appropriate Base

This course builds a clinical and practical foundation to build from when going through the process of selecting the appropriate power mobility device. Participants will begin by starting from the ground up with the physical capabilities and performance characteristics of rear wheel drive, mid-wheel drive, and front wheel drive; gaining an understanding of how each configuration behaves within differing environments. Participants will then interact within small focus groups, working hands-on with interactive technology and actual power wheelchairs, to solve specific challenges that are based out of actual case study.

 Alex Chesney is the Clinical Sales Manager of the Midwest South region for Quantum   Rehab. Alex graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science degree i   n Multidisciplinary Studies with a minor in Psychology in 2011. She then earned her Master   of Occupational Therapy from Texas Woman’s University in 2013. Alex practiced as an   occupational therapist in a top neurological inpatient rehabilitation center in Houston, treating those with traumatic spinal cord injuries and various neurodegenerative diseases. As a clinician, Alex was a prescriber of advanced seating and mobility technologies and a primary education resource for best practice within neurological rehabilitation. Alex serves as a committee chair for The Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals.

Early Intervention in Wheeled Mobility

Play is often described as the work of children and is one of the primary ways in which children learn. Unfortunately for many children with physical limitations engaging in activities including play without the support of adaptive equipment is not possible. In addition, the lack of proper positioning and mobility equipment can have a significant impact on a child’s respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, muscular skeletal system, and develop skills (e.g. communication, cognition, social emotional, etc.).
During this two-hour seminar participants will learn about the roll seating and mobility plays in a child’s development, the complete evaluation process, and complex rehabilitation technology (CRT) available specifically for infants to young children as well as the clinical application of the equipment discussed.

 Linda Bollinger, DPT
 Linda Bollinger joined the Sunrise Medical team in the fall of 2018 as a Clinical Education   Manager.  She has a BS-MS in physical therapy from Long Island University, Brooklyn.  In   May 2018, she earned her DPT from Utica College.  In addition, she received her ATP   certification in 2000. 
 Prior to joining the Sunrise Medical team, Linda was the Director of Rehabilitation at Long   Island Select Healthcare (formerly UCP Suffolk).  Her experience at UCP included   developing and operating a seating and mobility clinic for individuals with disabilities.  Although this clinic primarily served developmentally disabled children and adults, the patients included individuals with acquired disabilities, as well.  Prior to joining UCP, Linda had successfully created a pediatric seating clinic at a local school for disabled students.  Linda has shared her knowledge and experience running seating clinics at local community health events, guest lectures with local physical therapy and occupational therapy university programs, and most recently as a Teacher’s Assistant at Touro Physical Therapy program.
Linda is excited to bring her experience providing seating and mobility services to her new role at Sunrise Medical by providing education and training to therapists, ATPs and the community.

The course will provide an overview of funding for assistive technology/durable medical equipment, including various public and private sources. It will assist participants in understanding the similarities and differences between programs and how to secure funding for AT/DME in a more effective and efficient manner. Participants will learn strategies to document the need for and expedite acquisition of equipment

 Maria A Jones, PT, PhD 
 Maria A. Jones is program director and clinical professor at Oklahoma City University (OCU).   She is leading the development of a physical therapy education program at OCU. Dr. Jones   has been a physical therapist for over 30 years providing physical therapy and assistive   technology services to children and adults with developmental disabilities. Her research focus   has been on early power mobility and its effect on young children with severe motor   impairments and clinical decision-making about wheeled mobility. Over the years, she has consulted with many Oklahoma state agencies, including the Health Care Authority, State Department of Education, State Department of Health, Department of Human Services, Developmental Disabilities Services, and Department of Rehabilitation Services in the areas of durable medical equipment/assistive technology and service provision for people with developmental disabilities. She has taught courses in developmental disabilities, assistive technology, and research methods. Dr. Jones currently serves as the Federal Affairs Liaison for the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy.
