Managed Care Medicaid: 
The Manual and Medical Necessity

This class takes an in-depth look at Managed Care Medicaid and the Texas Medicaid Provider Procedures Manual (TMPPM), the extensive document that lists all covered benefits and contains prior authorization requirements for the medical equipment your clients need.  Understanding these requirements will help you generate better documentation, speed up the authorization process and reduce denials.  Using the TMPPM as a guide, we will fill out the TMHP Wheelchair and Seating Assessment Form for a client who requires an Ultralight Manual Wheelchair.

What's Taking So Long? 
Understanding the Funding Process

Participants will track an equipment request from the day of evaluation to the day of delivery and on to the day of re-imbursement, to gain a better understanding of the process and the overall cost of medical equipment.  Discussion will include what is meant by a covered benefit and why the allowable may prevent some equipment from being covered.

 Kenny Gage, ATP
 Kenny Gage has worked in the Rehab Equipment Industry for 20 years providing   specialized equipment for clients of all ages and a wide variety of diagnoses. He   started in the industry at All Star Medical in 1998 and obtained his ATP   certification in 2009. After 16 years, All Star Medical was acquired by Travis   Medical, which started his journey with the Travis family. He has worked with therapists in the home setting, schools and clinical settings as an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), bringing extensive knowledge of equipment and experience in product application to the team. He has served on multiple advisory councils and focus groups working on research and development of innovative mobility equipment.  He has assisted with Travis Medical’s North Texas branches and helped incorporate augmentative and alternative communication devices into Travis’s Rehab Division.  Currently, he is an active ATP in South Texas for Travis Medical.

Wiliam Townsend, ATP
 Will has been in the CRT industry for almost 30 years.  He joined Travis Medical   in 1995 as Service Technician.  He moved from Service Technician to Service   Manager and then into Rehab Sales where he became a certified ATP in 2008.   Will has worked closely with MDA and the ALSA organizations helping with funding raising programs and summer camp for MDA. He also has held seating clinics at various rehab facilities evaluating the needs for clients from custom seating to specialized power chairs with alternative controls.  In 2011, he moved to Corpus Christi and opened the rehab department at the Travis Medical Corpus branch.  He has since been servicing the Texas Coastal Bend area covering a 100-mile territory including Victoria, Corpus, George West and South Kingsville areas.

Child and Adolescent:
Strategies to Enhance Outcomes

When posture develops abnormally, and certain developmental milestones are either delayed or not met at all, it can affect numerous abilities. Recognition of the sequellae of abnormal postural development and other developmental milestones is crucial. Understanding appropriate interventions in the provision of assistive technology can help a child and caregivers to achieve an improved quality of life, improved function, and hopefully diminish additional issues later on.
Participants will learn about the development of posture for both normally abled and disabled persons, and about the importance of postural control in the daily lives and functional activities of those persons. Participants will learn about achieving key developmental milestones, and the various and inter-related impacts associated with not achieving those milestones in the normal time frame. Participants will learn how facilitating or enabling a client with physical disabilities to receive appropriate postural support through assistive technology to control posture against the force of gravity can be an important contributor to overall well-being, function within the individual's environment, physiological function, and long term optimal management of medical conditions

Wheelchair Cushions:
The Science the Should be Driving Your Clinical Choices

Participants will learn what forces need to be understood when considering the selection of wheelchair cushions.  They will be taught measurable characteristics of wheelchair seats for tissue integrity and a method of comparative testing.  Participants will learn how to identify different materials used in the design of cushions and how those materials interact with the anatomy for pressure distribution.  They will also learn how to understand durability and stability of these materials in cushion construction.  We will cover how to identify and understand different design techniques used to improve cushion efficacy and their potential effects on functional outcomes.

 Deborah L. Pucci, PT, MPT
 Debbie received her degree from Northwestern University in 1998. She has 20   years of clinical experience in neurologic rehabilitation, with specializations in   wheelchair seating and mobility and acute spinal cord injury. She has held     multiple positions at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab since 1999 (formerly known as   the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago), including senior therapist on the acute spinal cord injury unit, research study coordinator for the spinal cord injury model systems program, and wheelchair and seating clinical specialist. She has presented CEU courses and lectures domestically and internationally in both the areas of seating and mobility and acute rehabilitation for spinal cord injury. Currently, Miss Pucci works as a clinical educator for Ki Mobility and as a clinical specialist for the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab wheelchair and seating clinic.
