THINKING INSIDE THE BOX: STANDARD CUSHIONS AND BACKS
Selecting the best seating system for a client is crucial for not only his/her overall function, but also health. This two-hour seminar focuses on the clinical rationale for standard cushion and back choices along the continuum of seating. Participants will gain an understanding of how materials and design play specific roles in selecting the proper wheelchair cushion and back. In addition, examples of customizations which can be made to standard cushions and backs will be provided (including potential clinical applications for each customization).

PRESENTED BY:  Linda Bollinger, DPT
Linda Bollinger DPT joined the Sunrise Medical team this fall as a  Clinical  Education  Manager.  She has a BS-MS in physical therapy  from Long  Island University, Brooklyn. In  May 2018, she earned her  DPT from Utica  College.  In addition, she received her ATP  certification in 2000.
Prior to joining the Sunrise Medical team, Linda was a Director of Rehabilitation at Long  Island Select Healthcare (formerly UCP Suffolk).  Her experience at UCP included  developing and operating a seating and mobility clinic for individuals with disabilities.  Although this clinic primarily served adult patients, she had successfully created a pediatric seating clinic at a local school for multiple disabled students years prior to joining UCP.  Linda has shared her knowledge and experience running  seating clinics at local community health events, guest lectures with local physical therapy and occupational therapy university programs, and most recently as a TA at Touro College Physical Therapy program.
Linda looks forward to her new role at Sunrise and providing Continuing Education to Therapists and ATPs.

STANDING: WHY, WHAT AND HOW?
Supported standing is recommended and used clinically in the pediatric population
for a variety of neuromuscular diagnoses. The justification for a standing program is
based upon several factors. Clinical goals may vary or change with the age of the
individual. This presentation will review the documented benefits of a standing
program. The rationale used to select one type of stander over another will be discussed. The clinical benefits and rationale for selection will be used to create the medical necessity of the standing device.

Specialty controls allow those individuals who lack full control over their bodies to be able to have a level of independence by controlling the power wheelchair through its sophisticated electronics. The electronics these days provide further independence through Bluetooth and Infrared technology available on many wheelchairs. There will be a lecture and a hands-on portion of the class to provide participants with a variety of learning experiences.
