Join your fellow deacons and priests for a day of retreat before Advent begins. Cameron B. R. Howard, a professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary, will gather us together for learning and reflection on the texts before us in Year A and how they speak to the events of our world—political, racial, and more—today.
The lectionary texts from the book of Isaiah reflect three distinct historical moments. In each one, Judah had to discern God's faithfulness while navigating difficult political realities. We will explore that historical backdrop, discuss Isaiah's literary and theological innovations, and reflect together about what the texts can tell us about the kingdom of God. We will also look at the ways Matthew reinterprets these Old Testament texts for a new day.
