Clergy spend so much time nurturing the spiritual lives of others. Take time now, at the beginning of a new liturgical year, to nourish your own spiritual life, with the Rev. James Derkits.
James, his wife Laura, and their son Eli moved to Port Aransas, TX in 2012 where he is vicar of Trinity by the Sea, a 50 year-old mission. While having been reared in the Episcopal Church (from summer camp to weekly acolyte) his interest is helping non-churchy folk find spirituality in their lives, and helping churchy folk discover God is not locked in our naves. His avocation as a musician helps in this, and playing gigs in bars in his spare time helps make important connections with people.
He believes, “we live in an age of resurrection for the church, and the new thing bears the wounds of the old thing: it’s beautiful and scarred; it shines with wisdom, and is able to walk through walls and dispel fear.”
