NAIFA-Dallas October  25 Luncheon

 Shannon Phillips Meroney, JD

Aetna Government Relations

"Healthcare Reform"

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires states to establish an Exchange for the individual and small group markets by 2014.  With the 2012 Presidential election around the corner, what impact will the election results have on the federal reforms?  How is Texas likely to respond to the Exchange requirements?  How do you promote choice through a competitive and innovative insurance market and minimize market disruption through careful implementation of new federal reforms?

October is NAIFA’s Health Insurance Awareness Month and we would like to welcome Shannon Meroney to speak at our luncheon regarding healthcare reform.

Shannon Phillips Meroney, J.D., manages Government Relations for Aetna in seven states including Texas. Ms. Meroney was previously a Partner at the law firm of Thompson Coe Cousins & Irons where she specialized in insurance defense litigation and lobbied for the Texas Association of Life & Health Insurers (TALHI) and the Association of Fire & Casualty Insurers of Texas (AFACT).

Shannon received her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her law degree from the University of Houston Law  Center where she was Order of the Coif.  Shannon is a Past President of the Texas Association of Health Plans, Secretary of the Oklahoma Association of Health Plans, and a Past Chair of Leadership Austin’s Board of Directors. She sits on Aetna Foundation’s Regional Community Investment Committee, the Austin Bar Association’s Board of Directors, has served on the Junior League of Austin’s Board of Directors, the Seton Forum, and the Leadership Council for the American Lung Association’s Austin Chapter. She was Vice Chair of the Austin’s Commission for Women. She is a frequent lecturer on healthcare reform and the proud mom of Cal (6 yrs) and Griffin (4 yrs).

The Dental/Medical Connection

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Recent research has shown that there is a direct and significant connection between the health of our teeth and gums and our overall health. A visit to the dentist can be the first indicator of larger health concerns such as diabetes and heart disease. We will discuss those connections and indicators and show how we can educate ourselves and our clients about the importance of oral health.
