Positive Approach to Dementia Care: Seeing It From The Other Side

                                                                       DESCRIPTION

Teepa Snow is an Occupational Therapist and well-known dementia expert who has developed many training materials which focus on describing the various forms of dementia, identifying the dynamics of brain failure on day-to-day function, and teaching practical techniques to interact more effectively with those who have dementia.  This session is a hands-on look at her new series called, "Seeing It From The Other Side."  It focuses on describing the typical changes in the aging brain and then contrasts it with the changes when any form of dementia is present.  Then it provides some practical techniques for interacting more effectively despite these changes.

                                                                     OBJECTIVES

*  Compare and contrast "normal" aging versus "not normal" aging related to various cognitive functions
*  Describe the five sensory input and processing systems, highlighting the dominant role of vision, and  demonstrate the changing role of the senses as dementia progresses
*  Describe the "Gems Classification System" to help determine an individual's changing abilities and the level of interaction that best meets those abilities
*  Develop and practice the interactive techniques of "Positive Physical Approach" and "Hand Under Hand Assistance" as they relate to assisting someone with dementia in day-to-day functions
