Title:
Recognizing Weak Executive Functioning and Reducing Its Negative Impact on Learning and Performance

Description:
“Executive functions” is a term used to describe a broad set of cognitive skills that, when working properly, allow students to manage impulses, work in a deliberate and thoughtful manner, and organize their time and materials. When development of these skills is delayed, as is often the case in those with learning disabilities, ADHD, or emotional disorders, academic performance suffers, but for reasons not fully understood. For example, a student with dyslexia, although receiving intensive reading intervention, continues to receive low grades in school because she does not consistently turn in her homework. When working with students who have special educational needs, it is imperative that professionals also consider whether or not the student is displaying age-appropriate executive functioning skills; additional assessment and intervention may be necessary.

This workshop will define the term “executive functioning” using clear, easy to understand terms. It will also draw the connection between executive functioning and academics, highlighting the ways in which executive dysfunction can negatively impact learning and performance. Finally, many concrete strategies will be provided that can be used to support a student with weak executive functioning.

Luncheon Speaker
12:15 to 1:45
Gordon Doran

Growing up with dyslexia, Mr. Doran struggled throughout school. Along the way, he found resources and accommodations that helped him. His Entrepreneurship studies led to his career choices as a successful entrepreneur. Mr. Doran's luncheon talk will be a story of encouragement from which other dyslexics can learn.

Gordon Doran

Gordon Doran was born in 1974 and raised in Houston, Texas. Gordon is a husband, a father of 2 children, and also a successful entrepreneur. In 4th grade he was diagnosed with dyslexia and placed in special education classes. Gordon struggled with being ashamed, embarrassed, and scared of his handicap. He graduated from high school in 1992 with a 3rd grade writing level and a 5th grade reading level. To begin his college career Gordon attended Tomball Community College that summer and after 3 years he graduated with an Associate’s Degree. He struggled in college putting in what seemed like 10 times more work than that of his peers. Gordon took advantage of any resources and accommodations that were available including: textbooks in audio format, using other students’ notes, attending tutorial labs, accepting extended time on tests and any other accommodations that were available. In the fall of 1996, Gordon started to further his education at the University of Houston. He was one of the 30 students selected to participate in the Center for Entrepreneurship program and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Entrepreneurship the Spring of 1998. Three months after graduation Gordon started his first business called “That’s Entertainment” which advertised local businesses through coupon sales. In the summer of 2000, he started a successful home preservation company called Advantage Pro Services, Inc., which specializes in pressure washing, window cleaning, and gutter cleaning.
