Grief Across the Life Span

Friday, June 16, 2023  *  10:00 am - 3:10 pm (4 CEUs)

(9:30 - 10:00 am: sign-in to Zoom wait room)

This program is funded in part by the William B. and Sylvia A. Hunsberger Fund

Grief is experienced differently for children and adolescents versus adults. This seminar will focus on the characteristics of grief at different ages as well as the various types of grief from bereavement to complicated grief. An individual’s reaction to grief may be affected by the circumstances of the loss, whether it is expected or sudden, suicide or murder, or related to illness. Co-occurring disorders that compound grief and loss also will be discussed. Attendees will learn treatment strategies for common and complicated grief to help clients move through the grieving process.

At the conclusion, attendees should be able to:

Discuss the different types of grief
Discuss the differences between child/adolescent and adult grief
Determine when normal grief becomes complicated grief and requires intervention
Discuss co-occurring conditions and disorders that complicate grief and loss
Outline the unique needs of suicide, homicide or sudden death survivors
Develop a variety of treatment strategies, skills and interventions to help clients navigate the grieving process
