This seminar will focus on the spectrum of illnesses known as schizophrenia and related disorders, with special emphasis on intervention and treatment for first episode psychosis. This will include historical perspective and etiology, assessment and differential diagnosis, and successful interventions and treatment approaches. Several evidence-based treatment options will be presented. The importance of cultural considerations and involving families and caregivers in the treatment process will also be discussed.

At the conclusion of the seminar, attendees should be able to:

• Discuss the etiology of psychosis and schizophrenia
• Explain the components of coordinated specialty care for first episode psychosis
• Describe the benefits of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for individuals experiencing psychosis
• Incorporate social skills training to improve overall functioning
• Employ cultural competency in the treatment of individuals with first episode psychosis

Featured Presenters:

Katy Rinehimer, LCPC, is the team leader and clinical supervisor of The Early Psychosis Intervention Clinic (EPIC) at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. She works within a multi-disciplinary team to provide treatment for young people suffering from their first break with a Schizophrenia spectrum disorder.

Maxwell Wolcott, LCSW-C, is a team leader and primary therapist of The Early Psychosis Intervention Clinic (EPIC) at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Peter L. Phalen, PsyD, is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Baltimore VA and University of Maryland School of Medicine where he specializes in psychosis as a clinician and researcher.

Pamela Rakhshan Rouhakhtar, MA, is a clinical psychology doctoral student at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She is the project manager for the Strive for Wellness clinic, a clinical high risk program, as a researcher and clinician.

Seminar Fee:  $ 119.00  (Fee includes continental breakfast, lunch and 6 CEUs)

CANCELLATION POLICY:  A $10 processing fee will apply. To receive a refund, cancellations must be made in writing and received no later than one week prior to the seminar. No refunds/credits will be made after the one-week date or for no shows on the day of the program.

Professional Continuing Education Credits:

An important message about Continuing Education Credits:  Brook Lane seminars are approved for continuing education credits as an entire event.  PARTIAL CREDIT WILL NOT BE AWARDED. To assure that you receive continuing education credit, you must be on time and complete the entire seminar.

Counselors/Therapists:  Brook Lane Health Services has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP TM) # 5452. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified.  Brook Lane solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.  This program will provide 6 clock hours; partial credit will not be awarded.

Social Workers:  Brook Lane Health Services is an approved sponsor of the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners for continuing education credits for licensed social workers in Maryland. This program will provide 6.0 credit hours of Category I continuing education; partial credit will not be awarded.   

Psychologists:  The Maryland State Board of Examiners for Psychologists will accept continuing education hours provided by Brook Lane, an approved CE sponsor by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners.

Other Healthcare Professionals and Attendees:  A certificate of completion noting the number of educational/contact hours will be provided for other disciplines to allow attendees to apply for CE credit as an individual.
