The Trauma of Sexual Abuse

This seminar will explore the trauma of sexual abuse from a systems and clinical perspective. Emphasis will be placed on working with diverse populations. Discussion will include victim and offender typologies, cultural differences and competency, the impact of sexual abuse on mental health, addictions, gender differences and treatment modalities. Current literature will be discussed and participants will be able to articulate the importance of exploring sexual trauma and the diverse components that are integral for effective treatment delivery. This is an interactive workshop where case vignettes will be presented and participants will work in a group setting.

At the conclusion of the seminar, attendees should be able to:
  • Define sexual trauma
  • Articulate the importance and need for cultural competency in the assessment process
  • Explore victim and offender typologies and gender differences
  • Identify various cultural barriers that should be taken into consideration when assessing and treating diverse populations
  • Discuss the connection between sexual abuse and increased addiction and mental health concerns
  • Learn essential clinical skills for working with victims of sexual abuse

Featuring Veronica Cruz, LCSW-C.  Veronica is a bilingual (Spanish/English) clinical and forensic social worker with over 19 years of experience working with children, adolescents and families. She specializes in criminal defense mitigation, dual diagnosis, crisis intervention, addiction, trauma and working with diverse ethnic groups. She is a frequent educator and lecturer on the topics of trauma, cultural competency, substance use, mental health and the criminal justice system, ethics and other mental health concerns. Ms. Cruz is the founder and CEO of Cruz & Associates, LLC where she specializes in preparing comprehensive forensic psycho-social reports for criminal and civil matters. Ms. Cruz is a graduate of the Catholic University of America with a B.A. in psychology and received her Masters of Social Work, specializing in mental health and addiction from the University of Maryland School of School Work. In 2014 she completed an advanced two-year post graduate Forensic Social Work certification through the University of Maryland.

Seminar Fee:  $119.00  (includes continental breakfast, lunch & CEUs)

Cancellation Policy: A $10.00 processing fee applies to all cancellations. To receive a refund (less the $10.00 cancellation fee), cancellations must be made in writing and received no later than one week prior to the seminar. After that date, no refunds will be made.

Continuing Education Credits

Maryland Social Workers: Brook Lane is an approved sponsor of the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners for continuing education credits for licensed social workers in Maryland. Brook Lane is solely responsible for all aspects of the Program. This program will provide 6.0 credit hours of Category 1 continuing education; partial credit will not be awarded.

Maryland Psychologists: The Maryland State Board of Examiners for Psychologists will accept continuing education hours provided by Brook Lane, an approved CE sponsor by the Maryland State Board of Social Worker Examiners; partial credit will not be awarded.

Counselors/Therapists (LCPC): Brook Lane has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 5452. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Brook Lane is solely responsible for all aspects of the program. This program will provide 6 clock hours; partial credit will not be awarded.

Other Professionals: A certificate of completion noting the number of educational/contact hours will be provided.
