One in five American adults has a mental illness, but many are reluctant to seek help, or might not know where to turn for care. Symptoms of mental illness and substance addiction can be difficult to detect. Just as CPR helps even those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid prepares you to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aiders learn a five-step action plan that guides them through the process of reaching out and offering appropriate support.

The National Council for Behavior Health helped to bring Mental Health First Aid training to the U.S. in 2008 with the hopes of making this training as common as the traditional First Aid or CPR training. The Mental Health First Aid Training teaches about recovery and resiliency – the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better, and use their strengths to stay well, through the Mental Health First Aid course. Mental Health First Aid is included on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). Participants who successfully complete the entire eight-hour course (8.5 hours including lunch/break) will receive the National Council for Behavioral Health's certification as a Mental Health First Aider.
