Understanding Immigrant Rights

Cost: $50

Target Audience: Direct service staff and their supervisors, leadership staff

Community Action and other human services staff work with individuals and families in need from all walks of life, and from all corners of the globe. In today’s world, it is important that staff who work directly with those served by human services organizations are familiar with the rights of immigrants and asylum seekers who come through your doors for help.

The Political Asylum/Immigration Representation (PAIR) Project provides free legal services to asylum seekers and promotes the rights of detained immigrants. In this session, a PAIR lawyer will share resources and information you can use to empower the people you serve by helping them to:

  • Understand the current situation on the ground
  • Understand their rights when encountered by immigration officers
  • Understand what they can do to prepare themselves and their families
  • Understand where to go for help

Presenter: Irene Freidel, Access to Justice Fellow and volunteer lawyer with the Political Asylum/Immigration Representation (PAIR) Project
