HOW TO STAY AFLOAT WHEN PROBLEMS ARISE

If you're a small-business owner, you're by definition a risk-taker. The danger, however, of being comfortable with taking leaps of faith is that you can sometimes overlook smart and simple ways to minimize the damage if your leap ends in a fall.

This workshop will give you concrete steps to minimize risks that you know about and, importantly, risks that you might not know about. A team of risk management professionals will guide you through key ways to protect you business:

Effective Cash Management

Harry Precourt has several decades’ experience keeping companies solvent, structuring financing to solve cash-flow issues, and sustaining growth. He has done this in the for-profit sector as a senior lending officer with major banks, a principal with a major accounting firm, and CEO/founder/owner of a corporate finance advisory firm. Concurrently he has brought the same tools and techniques to the nonprofit sector as board member, acting CFO, and member of executive management (declined CEO positions). Harry is a SCORE NYC Mentor.

Identify insurable risks and affordable policies that cover the risks

Brian Price brings over twenty years of Marketing and e-Commerce experience from Fortune 500 Broadband & Entertainment providers Verizon and Frontier Communications. 

Brian is Vice President of Marketing for Hiscox Small Business Insurance responsible for growing sales and all mass, direct and digital marketing tactics including: SEO/SEM, display, direct mail, mobile and affiliate marketing. In addition he is responsible for the industry leading website Hiscox.com where small business owners can receive a quote and purchase professional liability, general liability and business owner policies totally online and receive policy documents and certificates of insurance within minutes. 

Brian holds an MBA from Long Island University and a BS in Business Administration from Mercy College.

Negotiate real estate leases that protect your current and growing business

Instructor: Jan Lewis
Jan Alan Lewis is a Member of the firm’s Real Estate Department, concentrating in commercial office and industrial leasing, representing both landlords and tenants, on a local, regional and national basis. He has handled various complex real estate transactions on behalf of prominent owners, developers and companies throughout the United States, and he has frequently been retained as local counsel to represent tenants with respect to their leases in the Tri-State Area. Jan’s responsibilities have included the preparation, review and negotiation of leases and related documents for commercial (including office, industrial, warehouse and retail) and residential properties, brokerage agreements, and contracts of sale for the purchase and sale of commercial and residential properties.

A member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, as well as the New Jersey State Bar Association, New York County Lawyers’ Association and the American Bar Association, Jan has also been a frequent lecturer and has authored numerous articles on the subject of commercial leasing.

Jan earned his B.A., summa cum laude, from Lehigh University in 1979, and his J.D. from Temple University School of Law in 1982.

Protect Your Intellectual Property

Instructor: Laurie Marshall
Laurie Marshall is the Founder and President of Marshall Law Group (TradeMarks The Spot), a business designed to help entrepreneurs and small business owners protect their intellectual property, specifically their trademarks. Laurie has been a trademark attorney for close to 20 years and has worked for several well-known firms in New York City.  She also spent 10 years as Major League Baseball's in-house counsel. Her client list includes many Major League Baseball Clubs, the National Basketball Association and hundreds of entrepreneurs who have started their small businesses in a variety of industries.  Laurie speaks regularly on trademarks at venues such as General Assembly, In Good Company, Green Spaces, AlleyNYC, FIT, NYIT and presents webinars for SCORE.  Laurie is also a Venture in Residence at the NYIT Entrepreneur Center.  Additionally, Laurie's business was asked to move to the next round of competition to be on SHARK TANK Season 5.  She is an awardee of Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence competition and was among a select few to receive a Jump Start award.  Laurie also works with clients who have been part of Daymond John's Success Academy.

Built a $100mm global business which sold to a Fortune 500 company. Successful entrepreneur in industrial products manufacturing businesses with leadership and organizational skills in domestic and global markets. He has an operating contracting business and is a Board Member and partner of a post start-up business in biomaterials. Currently serves on two boards in the non profit sector. Graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute B.S. Ch. Eng. and graduate work at Babson Institute. M.S. Case Western Reserve. SCORE NYC mentor.
