ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE BASICS FOR ENTREPRENEURS 

How well do you understand the income and expenses of your business?

It’s not possible to operate your business without the ability to account for dollars received and dollars spent. 

Determining the best legal structure, obtaining financing and managing your money are all essential for running your business.  In this seminar you will learn:

  • The differences between a sole proprietor, a partnership and a corporation
  • The financing options available to small businesses
  • The importance of a business plan
  • The importance of proper bookkeeping
  • The types of accounting software appropriate for your business

Biographies:

Carol Soman: Importance of Bookkeeping 
Carol Soman (Long Island Business News CFO of the Year 2013) is a business optimization expert and CPA with a very different approach to business relationships. Her education, business experience and resources enable her and her select team to create a serious impact for the owners of select closely held companies. Her real world experience in the trenches as a CPA, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer  and Chief Operating Officer of manufacturing, distribution, technology and service companies give her a unique skill set and depth of knowledge which she applies in a partnering relationship with business clients.

The team at Dashboard NY works with clients helping them interpret their financial data on an ongoing basis as well as strategically plan for their future growth. They have had great success in finding the profit leaks that every business has which has saved their clients hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Bob Moses: FICO Credit Scores 
Bob Moses worked as a CPA for 35 years, finishing his career as head of corporate taxes at Sony Corporation, specializing in domestic and international tax planning, with an expertise in using laws to reduce financing costs. He was also heavily involved in efforts to affect tax legislation, particularly in the areas of unitary tax and sales taxes.

Bob started his career at Price Waterhouse and, subsequently headed tax departments in the oil and gas area and in the entertainment industry, most notably at Columbia Pictures. As a SCORE NYC Mentor, he has specialized in writing business plans and obtaining financing for small businesses, both start-ups and already active operations. He has also given seminars in the areas of accounting and finance for SCORE and for the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA). He holds a BS degree from Union College and an MBA from Baruch College

Bernadette Schopfer: Choice of Entity 
Bernadette H. Schopfer joined the firm of Maier Markey & Justic LLP in 1995.  During her career in public accounting, Ms. Schopfer has garnered over 25 years of accounting and tax experience.  She is a partner of the firm as well as the firm’s Director of Taxation.  Ms. Schopfer is an experienced business advisor dedicated to serving the needs of growing businesses, including owner-managed businesses.  She brings added value to the traditional business advisory services of tax consulting, with traditional tax planning and tax return preparation services, and value-added consulting and tax planning services that are essential to the wealth building and retention objectives of growing businesses.  Before joining Maier Markey & Justic LLP, Ms. Schopfer enjoyed a six year career in the accounting and tax departments of Ernst & Young LLP, where she progressed to the position of tax manager in Ernst & Young LLP's Entrepreneurial Services Practice.  Ms. Schopfer received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in Accounting from Siena College in 1988, her Masters in Taxation from Pace University in 1997 and her Certified Public Accountant license in 1991.  She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Estate Planning Committee. 

Alan Fishman:  Business Plans
Business consultant providing financial, tax and operational advice to businesses of all types and sizes. Developing business plans and entity structure is an area of high interest and involvement. 

Past and current industry experience includes medical services, wholesale food distribution, professional services (architectural and engineering firms), restaurants (single and multi-unit full service, fast food and franchised stores), real estate (residential and commercial rental), ad-specialty promotions and manufacturing.
