TOPIC: Roundabouts: Be Brave and Be Careful!
This presentation is an introduction to roundabouts and a summary of current roundabout planning and design best practices. Topics to be covered are:
- What is and what is not a roundabout
- Benefits of roundabouts
- Potential challenges with roundabouts
- Key design parameters and criteria
- How to decide between a roundabout and other types of intersection traffic control
PRESENTER: Steve Thieken, PE, PTOE, AICP is a transportation engineer and planner that has been involved as the lead investigator or quality control on the detailed study, design, or peer review of over 100 modern roundabouts in six states. Steve’s experience includes roundabout operational analysis, geometric design, maintenance of traffic, signing/striping, and lighting. He was an original member of the ITE Roundabout Taskforce.
