The Age of the Steam Roundhouse
After the successful development of his short line railroad system and it’s recent sale, our now retired client needed storage and repair facilities for his large collection of historic steam locomotives and “first generation” diesel locomotives. The result is America’s first locomotive roundhouse since the 1940s. It is a 48,000 square feet building of solid masonry walls and heavy timber framing with 18 stalls each large enough for a locomotive and it’s tender. It will be one of the largest heavy timber structures in America. The project includes an 18,700 square feet steel & masonry backshop building for locomotive repair and restoration. A backshop is accessible by rail from the first stall of the roundhouse. A 30 ton capacity overhead crane traverses the length of the backshop while a drop pit equipped with lifting machinery for removal and service of locomotive wheels extends 14 down from the shop floor into the subgrade.
About the Presenter
Mr. Goodman has long maintained an interest in the railroad industry and it’s history. Familiarity with 19th century construction methods has led to several railroad station rehabilitations. His study and experience in locomotive maintenance brought him railroad maintenance and storage facilities projects including the impressive Age of Steam Roundhouse.
Mr. Goodman spent his early career with an award-winning Columbus design firm. He developed an expertise in multifamily residential site planning of up to 1000 living units while the firm worked with Multicon, a large development company operated. His work with the firm also included the clubhouse and other unique buildings at the Muirfield Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Mr. Goodman presented his designs in vivid hand-drawn renderings. He entered into a partnership with his colleagues; early interest in computers brought the firm into the fast moving world of high technology which was one of the firms to use CADD. Goodman has experience in site planning and design for many rural multi-family projects, senior centers, community centers and senior citizen housing projects in Ohio and surrounding states.
Mr. Goodman formed F.A. Goodman Architects in 1996 and has continued since then with a broad client base including residential and commercial development companies, commercial property owners, and single-family homeowners. Land planning has become a firm specialty with emphasis on New Urbanist principles advocated by The Congress for the New Urbanism. Such principles are applied in his Florida resort design work in cooperation with Syed Design Group, a design firm based in Rosemary Beach, Florida. Recent work also includes much adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of existing structures.
