JAN BURKINS & KIM YARIS
Think Tank for 21st Century Literacy 

Jan Burkins and Kim Yaris are the writers and thinkers behind
Burkins & Yaris --- Think Tank for 21st Century Literacy,
where their blog and their instructional resources have drawn a national audience and made them thought leaders in the field of literacy instruction.

In their role as literacy consultants, Jan Burkins and Kim Yaris work closely with schools and districts, facilitating staff development, conducting in-class demonstrations, and developing curriculum. Kim Yaris is the founder of  Literacy Builders and spends more than 100 days per year consulting in schools, Jan Burkins, founder of Literacyheadhas authored and co-authored several books, including IRA's bestseller, Preventing Misguided Reading.

Kiran Singh Sirah, President, International Storytelling Center 

Kiran has developed a number of award-winning peace and conflict based programs in museums and cultural centers in the UK.  He led the International Helen Keller Arts Award. As an artist, folklorist, teacher and social justice curator, Kiran uses the power of human creativity to establish discourse and dialogue, empowering communities to address issues related to gang violence, sectarian and ethnic conflict, poverty and other forms of human rights violations.  As an advisory member to UNESCO, a Rotary Peace fellow, storyteller and poet, Kiran develops educational programs and publications, articles, talks and conference papers supporting UNESCO and Rotary Peace efforts in interdisciplinary approaches to international development.  In 2012, Kiran was invited to give an address at The United Nations Headquarters entitled Telling Stories That Matter.

The focus of our breakout sessions this year will be

LITERACY, SCHOOL COUNSELING AND SCHOOL SUCCESS

We will be offering a Counselor/Administrator Strand

with guest speaker Dr. Tammy Pawloski


Dr. Tammy Pawloski is director of Francis Marion University's Center for Excellence and an education professor. She draws on her experience growing up in the South to perform her work: teaching teachers about the impact of poverty.

"Children of Poverty: Shattering Myths and Challenging Barriers to Student Success"

She will open with a brief keynote after lunch
and lead into a double session.
