Mental toughness – dealing with chaos and challenging situations - 14 July 2020 @ 18.30/17.30 bst

The Key to Performance, Wellbeing, & Positive Behaviour

About the webinar

Recent events have tested to the extreme our capacity to respond positively and to manage the most difficult events. In todays VUCA world, this kind of disruption is not new and comes round more often than ever before. For leaders and leadership there are two challenges:

Firstly, their own mental responses to events which enable them to function as leaders. Extreme events can expose issues. Uncomfortable it may be, it is also a unique opportunity to learn how to cope with future occurrences.

Secondly, good leaders will have concern for wellbeing of their people. Assessing and understanding their mental responses is important in formulating strategies to optimise current well-being as well as ensuring when normality is restored, their people as in the best place mentally to get going again.

Mental Toughness is an aspect of our personality that determines how we deal with stress and pressure, and how we can see change as an opportunity to grow and develop. It describes the mental responses that every person adopts in everything they do. It is closely related to qualities such as character, mindset, resilience and grit.

Mental Toughness is universal, applicable in many walks of life. It has a particaulrly appropriate application in dealing with adversity, setback and crisis and doing so positively.

Global research shows that Mental Toughness is a major factor in:

  • Performance – explains up to 25% of the variation in attainment
  • Positive Behaviour – more engaged, positive and “can do” attitude
  • Wellbeing – more contentment and better stress management
  • Aspirations – more positive about opportunities and open to learning.

In short, in an age of unprecedented complexity, turbulence and change, our mental toughness matters.

Drawing upon the very latest global research and his own extensive international experience working within the corporate and education sectors, Doug Strycharczyk will provide an overview into to this important area.

The webinar will look at this important area and will examine briefly:

  • What is Mental Toughness?
  • How can I assess Mental Toughness and what it means for organisation, leaders and staff?
  • Why it is probably the most important aspect of people and organisation development today?
  • What can I do to develop Mental Toughness in my organisation?
