Creating the Future: Building a Whole Life for Adults in the Down Syndrome Community 

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

This half-day conference will present state-of-the-art information and best practices concerning health and behavioral concerns of the adult with Down syndrome. The conference is designed for parents and caregivers of individuals with Down syndrome age sixteen and above. The conference is presented by the Northern Virginia Friends of the Down Syndrome Clinic and Research Center, in conjunction with DSANV and the Down Syndrome Clinic and Research Center of the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

8:30 a.m.: Registration

9:00 a.m.: Health Concerns of the Adult with Down Syndrome- George Capone, M.D.

10:10 a.m.: Mental Health Concerns After School Ends- George Capone, M.D. and Patricia Shepley, MSW, LCSW-C

11:20 a.m.: Behavior Assessment and Management of Adults with Down Syndrome- Julia O’Connor, Ph.D. and Patricia Shepley, MSW, LCSW-C

SPEAKERS

George Capone, M.D.- Dr. Capone is a research scientist and director of the Down Syndrome Clinic and Research Center (DSCRC) at Kennedy Krieger Institute and is also a professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Julia O’Connor, Ph.D.- Dr. O’Connor is a research scientist and psychologist at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. She is the director of day treatment services for the Neurobehavioral Unit Outpatient Clinic in the Department of Behavioral Psychology. She is also an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Trish Shepley, MSW, LCSW-C- Ms. Shepley is the Clinical Director of the Psychiatric Mental Health Program and Director of the Social Work Department at Kennedy Krieger Institute. These departments are dedicated to achieving excellence in child-family centered mental health care through providing compassionate interdisciplinary clinical care, engaging trainees in a rich mentoring environment, and by furthering best practices through innovative research.
