Walking the Walk and Talking the Talk: The Letter to the Hebrews and Christian Life -Lunch and Learn

The Letter to the Hebrews is one of the most influential writings in the New Testament canon. Readings from Hebrew bracket the heart of the liturgical year as we hear (and have heard) its words at Christmas and Good Friday in the Western Lectionary.

The arguments in Hebrews weave together rich images from the Hebrews Bible and elements of Greek thought. The letter, nonetheless, is a dense sermon providing “a word of encouragement (Hebrew 13:11)” for a group of Christians who struggled with their own identity and the challenge to recommit to following Jesus, their Lord, Savior, and High Priest. For three Wednesdays from 12 noon to 1:00 PM we will listen to Hebrews and hear it as a charge to live the Christian Life (our WALK) based on a profoundly theological picture of God’s activity in the world and in our lives (the author’s TALK).

You are encouraged to read the whole of the letter. Each week there will be an area of focus for our study. Have your Bibles at hand over lunch: then read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest!

Presented by The Rev’d Lloyd Alexander Lewis, Jr., PhD. Lloyd (“Tony”) Lewis is a retired priest of the Diocese of Long Island, living in Alexandria, VA who has served as Dean of George Mercer, Jr. Memorial School of Theology. He is the Molly Laird Downs Professor of New Testament emeritus at Virginia Theological Seminary and is a Canon Theologian of the Diocese of Long Island.
