Fall Conference 2023

Join VAEA for our annual IN-PERSON conference, "Empowering Voices, Amplifying Belonging: The Artistic Journey," featuring keynote speaker Paula Liz at the Lake Morey Resort. Choose two workshops (one AM and one PM) from our selections for Friday (9/29).

We will also have a Saturday Session (9/30) with Chief Don Stevens at Stone Valley Arts in Poultney, VT. Space is limited for Saturday, so register early!

Note: Payments are non-refundable. Online registration ends on Friday, September 22th, 2023. No PO’s accepted. If you register in-person the same day as the conference, workshop choices may be limited.

Keynote Speaker: Paula Liz


Paula Liz (she/her) [pao-la-lees] is an artist, activist, educator, and author. She was born in Puerto Rico and attended the Maryland Institute of Art, receiving a bachelor of fine arts in painting and a master’s degree in art education. She has taught art in New York, Texas, Washington, DC, and Maryland, where she was named art educator of the year in 2022. Her passion for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion are at the center of her lessons and expand beyond the classroom. Paula Liz is a member of the National Art Education Association’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Commission and an initial cohort member of the Maryland Department of Education’s Anti-Racist Educators in the Arts Learning Lab (A-REALL). Keynote Description:   In this inspiring keynote speech, Paula Liz delves into the critical topic of creating a sense of belonging in the art room and the profound impact it has on students' artistic development and overall well-being. We explore the importance of the diverse representation of artists and its power in nurturing inclusivity and empowering all students to embrace their unique voices. With a focus on anti-bias and anti-racist education, Paula Liz shares the transformative role it plays in shaping an inclusive art room and curriculum. By addressing and challenging biases and systemic barriers, we pave the way for a truly inclusive and equitable artistic environment. Paula Liz will share personal stories, practical strategies, and approaches to ensure that all students, regardless of their background or identity, feel valued, respected, and included in the art room.
