Considering Race in the Early Childhood Classroom Part II

Race is part of everyone's story in the United States. However, as a subject related to professional development, it is rarely talked about. To start this much needed conversation in our field the Austin Chapter of TAEYC is helping trainers pilot a workshop series entitled: Considering Race in the Early Childhood Classroom. The second part of the series will include:

An examination of what it truly means to listen and meet others where they are
Some sharing around how our life intersects with different frameworks of race and racism
An exploration of Ethnic Identity Development and implications these theories have for practice in the early childhood classroom

While the nature of the series is meant to be comprehensive, we would still like to offer registration to individuals interested in joining isolated trainings.

There are 24 participants that completed the first workshop in which we:

-Explained how the social construction of race is not of biological significance.

-Learned some activities that teach young children the aesthetics of all hair, skin, and bones.

-Explored some language for talking to children about race while holding respect for the racial identity of families.

-Looked at some real consequences of race related to outcomes for children in the state of Texas.
