Learning Objectives:

1. Show how a west-facing glazed facade can control solar gain while admitting maximum amounts of diffuse natural light.
2. Show how interior layout and space planning can help promote deep penetratiion of natural light into office and laboratory environments.
3. Show how light monitors and active light harvesting control systems can augment a natural lighting scheme.
4. Show how design can promote a highly interactive environment for the exchange of ideas in an R&D work environment.

Randy Schumacher, AIA, LEED AP - Principal, CSO Architects

R. Randall (Randy) Schumacher received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Ball State University in 1986.  After practicing in Chicago for 3 years and passing the licensing exam for architects, he returned to his hometown of Indianapolis, IN in 1989 and joined CSO Architects as a Registered Architect. Randy’s 30+ year career at CSO has been characterized by a passion for design, serving in the roles of both Lead Designer and Project Manager throughout his career.

Randy has designed a great variety of building types, including office/administrative buildings, conference centers, laboratories, banks, churches, retail centers, hotels, performing arts centers, mixed use apartment/retail/office developments, student residence halls, dining facilities, academic/classroom buildings, libraries, science buildings, manufacturing plants, childcare centers, and correctional facilities. Randy’s projects have received numerous design awards, including (7) design awards from the American Institute of Architects. His work has been published in local and national level publications, including The Architectural Representation Handbook: Traditional and Digital Techniques for Graphic Communication by Paul Laseau, which featured Randy’s design and 3d computer modeling techniques.

In 2007 Randy received his LEED accreditation and he has since designed numerous award-winning, LEED certified buildings. In 2015 Randy received awards for “Building of the Year” and “Architect of the Year” from the NAIOP for his design of the General Electric LEAP Engine Plant in Lafayette, Indiana, and he is currently 5 years into the design of the National Desert Storm War Memorial in Washington, DC. Randy believes that the greatest value he brings to clients is his very creative, yet very realistic and budget sensitive, approach to design.
