Finger Lakes Regional Stream Monitoring Network Training 

If you've ever wanted to use your local stream as an outdoor classroom or engage your students in studying real-world water quality issues, this stream monitoring workshop is for you! Participants will learn:

• the importance of monitoring water quality of streams
• early detection strategies for invasive species in streams and the riparian corridor (NEW!) 
• the FLRSMN protocols and sampling techniques at a local stream
• how to enter/retrieve stream data using the FLRSMN database
• importance of engaging students as citizen scientists in water quality monitoring

Science teachers for grades 6-12 and environmental outreach educators are encouraged to participate in this training.

Participants will recieve 5 hours of CTLE credits from Hobart and William Smith Colleges for this workshop, the FLRSMN teacher manual, access to the FLRSMN online database and educator resources. Upon completion of this training, teachers will be eligible to sign out (for FREE) FLRSMN monitoring kits for classroom use.

A portion of this training will take place outside at a stream location near the Finger Lakes Institute. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather.

Please note- participants must be able to attend both Wednesday sessions.

Wednesday, March 27th (classroom):

4 pm - Welcome and Introductions

4:15 - 4:45 pm - Water Quality of Finger Lakes Streams and Intro to FLRSMN Program

4:45 - 5:30 pm- Invasive Species in the Stream and Riparian Corridor (Classroom ID with Samples)

5:30 - 6:00 pm - Water Chemistry Testing

6:00 - 6:30 pm - Sampling Site Selection

 

Wednesday, April 3rd (streamside and classroom):

4 pm- meet at FLI

4:15 - 5:30 pm- Stream Monitoring at Castle Creek

5:30 pm - 6:00 pm - FLRSMN Online Database- Enter and Retrieve Data

6:00 - 6:30 pm - Evaluations and Kit Sign Out
