Join the Finger Lakes Institute and Finger Lakes PRISM in a hands-on exploration of aquatic and terrestrial invasive species during a two-day teacher training, July 11-12, 2018. Teachers will learn about the history of invasives in the Finger Lakes region and their effects on local ecosystems, regional economics and human health. Hands-on training will be provided for field identification and survey methods of common terrestrial and aquatic invasives, as well as use of the online, GIS-based citizen science mapping tool called iMapInvasives. Teachers will work together on strategies for curricular integration into their existing science curricula.
The training is free and open to elementary through high school science educators in the Finger Lakes region. Teachers will receive free field identification guides for both aquatic and terrestrial invasive species, will be registered with a free iMapInvasives account and will receive 14 hours of professional development/CTLE credits. Wednesday, July 11th: Aquatic Invasives

10:15 am – noon: Macrophyte Citizen Science Project (ID skills and survey methods for aquatic invasives)
noon – 12:30 pm: Working Lunch (provided) with Presentation
12:30 – 2:30 pm: Honeoye Inlet Channel Paddle and Aquatic Invasive ID
2:30 – 3:30 pm: Lab ID w/microscopes
3:30 – 4 pm: Reflection/Wrap-up
Thursday, July 12th: Terrestrial Invasives
9 – 10 am: Terrestrial Invasive Plant ID (Classroom)
10 - 11 am: iMap Invasives Mapping Training
11 am – noon: Invasives Highlight- Spotted Lanternfly & Mile-a-Minute
Noon- 12:30 pm: Working Lunch (provided) with Presentation
12:30 – 3 pm: Site Visit for Terrestrial Invasive Species Management- Cumming Nature Center
3 – 4 pm: Curricular Integration Strategies, Workshop Survey, Wrap-up
Lunch will be provided both days of training. Please dress for outdoor field work on land and water.
